On 10-11 May,
Dr. Takahiro Yamamoto, assistant professor of cultural economic history, was invited to present a paper at
Reopening the "Opening of Japan", an international conference at the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, University of Oxford, UK. His paper ‘A backdoor wide open: Japan’s passport regime and marine animal hunters in the Kuril Islands’ examined the transcultural encounters of people in the north Pacific rim that developed in tandem with the emergence of the modern Japanese state in the late nineteenth century.
