What happens when the city you live in changes over night? When the streets and neighborhoods that form the material counterpart to your mental soundtrack of memory suddenly cease to exist? The rapidly changing cityscapes of Taipei, Hong Kong and Shanghai form an environment of urban flux that causes such questions to surface. In my dissertation “Seven Senses of the City,” I focus on sensory modes of perception and recall as a pathway to exploring the physical interaction between body and city as well as the more elusive interactions between memory and imagination. To illustrate this sensory connection between human corpus and urban metropolis, I have created thirteen photo collages that combine views of Hong Kong, Taipei and Shanghai with human sensory organs and body parts. 目辨白黑美惡, 而耳辨音聲清濁, 口辨酸鹹甘苦,鼻辨芬芳腥臊, 骨體膚理辨寒暑疾養An eye can distinguish between what is black and white, beautiful or ugly;an ear can distinguish music and speech, what is clear and what is muffled;a mouth can distinguish between the sour and the salty, the sweet and the bitter;a nose can distinguish between sweet scents and floral perfumes, that which smells bloody and that which smells rank;the skin on a body can distinguish between heat and cold, the painful and the itchy.-    Rongru chapter of the Xunzi (trans.
