Title

Fellowship for Lorenzo Andolfatto

Date:

Date:

19 September 2019

With his project "Three Faces of Utopianism Revisited (Once Again): Braiding Utopian Traditions Between Europe and China,"
Dr. Lorenzo Andolfatto aims to expand his preliminary work on utopian and speculative fiction from late imperial China. It is informed by his work at the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies asa  member of the project "
East Asian Uses of the European Past" under the guidance of the professor for
Intellectural History,
Prof. Joachim Kurtz. The "three faces" mentioned in the project's title refer to the three forms in which – according to utopian scholar Lyman Tower Sargent – utopian thinking manifests itself in history: as literature, social theory, and experiments in communitarian living. Having already explored the first "face" (literature), in the years to follow I intend to explore the other two.
Dr. Andolfatto's fellowship with the
Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange has started in July 2019 and will continue until June 2021. The foundation was established in 1989 and is deeply committed to its mission of encouraging scholars at academic institutions throughout the world to undertake research projects in the humanities and social sciences that can shed new light on Chinese culture and society, as well as engage in international cooperation and exchange.
